55% polling recorded in Chandigarh MC elections

Chandigarh: Around 55 per cent polling was recorded in the election of 26 Councillors of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation which remained peaceful here on Saturday, elections officials said here.

Elections began at 8 AM to seal the fate of 152 candidates who are in fray and ended this evening.

There were 5.06 lakh voters including 2.25 lakh women in Chandigarh.

According to reports, in some wards the polling percentage was even more than 90 per cent, an election official said.

In the last elections, about 46 per cent voters had exercised their franchise.

The main contest in these elections was between Congress and BJP-SAD alliance.

Polling remained subdued in the morning due to prevailing cold conditions, but it gradually picked up during the day as polling came to an end at 5:30.

The counting of votes will take place on Monday and results are expected by afternoon.
