Sangrur: Five persons, including an Akali Dal woman leader, were killed and two others injured after they were run over by a truck in Lehra area here.
SAD women cell district unit president Baldev Kaur (46) and Manprit Kaur (17), Jaswant Kaur (45) and Balbir Kaur (60) died on the spot after being hit by the truck last night while a four-month child succumbed to injuries in a hospital.
The condition of the two injured women, Jaswant Kaur and Paramjit Kaur, was reported to be stable at Sangrur civil hospital, police said.
The incident occurred when about 50 women of the village and adjoining areas were performing Jago (a traditional ceremony held a day before marriage).
A pall of gloom descended the village and the marriage party and bridegroom Sarabjit Singh, rather than leaving for the marriage ceremony today, protested in the village and demanded stringent action against the truck driver.
The protest was called off following the assurance by ADC ADC Pritam Singh Johal that the accused driver Ram Singh was apprehended and the vehicle impounded.
SAD secretary general Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa has assured an ex-gratia of Rs one lakh to next of kin of deceased and free treatment of injured, sources said.
