Amarinder Singh resigns as Patiala MLA

Former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Monday tendered his resignation as Patiala MLA to Assembly Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal, after his election to Lok Sabha from Amritsar.

Chandigarh: Former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Monday tendered his resignation as Patiala MLA to Assembly Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal, after his election to Lok Sabha from Amritsar.

Amarinder was elected as MLA from the Patiala assembly constituency for three consecutive terms - 2002, 2007 and 2012. He defeated BJP bigwig Arun Jaitley in just-concluded parliamentary elections from Amritsar LS seat.
However, his wife and former Union Minister Preneet Kaur lost the Patiala Lok Sabha seat to AAP candidate Dharamvira Gandhi.
Preneet was MP from Patiala for three consecutive terms - 1999, 2004 and 2009.

Congress sources said that the Patiala assembly seat could be contested either by Amarinder Singh`s son Raninder or by his wife Preneet Kaur.
