Chandigarh: Breaking his silence on the exit of his nephew Manpreet Singh Badal from the Cabinet, SAD patriarch and Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Tuesday said the party was supreme and above all individuals.

The chief minister said he had tried his level best to prevent the situation from slipping out of hand but in the end he had to abide by what the party thought was correct.

Commenting for the first time on the sacking of the finance minister in the wake of a raging row over Centre's reported debt waiver offer to the state, he said "I did my best what I could do."

82-year-old Badal, who is recuperating after a fall from staircase, said for him blood relations did not matter and "the party is supreme and above all individuals."

"For my entire life, I have worked for my party to make it strong. In future too, I will continue to play this role," said the chief minister whose son Sukhbir is his Deputy and heads the Shiromani Akali Dal.

Badal questioned Manpreet's claim of Central's debt waiver offer of Rs 35,000 crore to the state and his stand on subsidies.

He said the talk of debt waiver offer was all in the air and there was nothing on record.

On subsidies, he categorically said the SAD had made certain promises to its electorate and these would continue.
