Chandigarh: A special trial court here Tuesday awarded life sentence to Paramjit Singh Bheora, one of the accused in the assassination of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh.
The quantum of sentence was announced by the Additional District and sessions judge RK Sondhi, who had earlier reserved the verdict for today.
Paramjit Singh Bheora, the chief of a Sikh extremist organization, was found guilty in the assassination of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh by the trial court.
Bheora, chief of operations (India) of Babbar Khalsa International, was facing trial after he was arrested in 1997 over his involvement in the murder.
The CBI had booked nine persons in connection with the killing of the then CM outside Punjab and Haryana secretariat on August 31, 1995.
Besides Bheora, Jagtar Singh Hawara, Jagtar Singh Tara, Gurmeet Singh, Balwant Singh, Lakhwinder Singh, Shamsher Singh, Naseeb Singh and Navjot Singh were booked.
