BJP not to support resolution on Bhullar

BJP said it will not support any resolution in the Punjab Assembly seeking clemency for convicted Khalistan militant Davinder Pal Singh Bhullar.

Chandigarh: BJP on Friday said that it will not
support any resolution in the Punjab Assembly seeking clemency
for convicted Khalistan militant Davinder Pal Singh Bhullar,
asserting the party will not compromise on its policy on
terror.

"Our policy on terrorism is very clear. We cannot make
any compromise on this. If SAD brings a resolution, our stand
will be the same inside (the Assembly) as what we have been
saying outside (in the public)," BJP vice-president Shanta
Kumar told reporters here.

In the wake of Tamil Nadu Assembly recently passing a
resolution to consider the mercy plea of the three convicts in
the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, various Sikh bodies have
asked Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to convey a
similar message on Bhullar.

Bhullar is on the death row after being convicted for
attacking former Youth Congress chief MS Bitta in Delhi in
1993. His mercy plea has been rejected by the President.

Kumar said, "Our stand (on terror) is consistent and
there is no change."

He, however, asserted that the BJP`s opposition to such a
resolution should not be seen as a shadow over the "age-old
and rock solid" relations with the SAD.

"It happens within a coalition, parties can differ over
an issue, but it will not have any impact on our ties, which
are strong as ever," Kumar said.

On 2G scam, the BJP vice president said, "Chidambaram
should resign without delay or should be sacked as minister."

"It is a surprise that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh
called Chidambaram over phone expressing full faith in his
integrity like he had done in the case of A Raja and Suresh
Kalmadi... both of them were put behind the bars later," he
said in the backdrop of a Finance Ministry note to the PMO on
the Home Minister`s alleged involvement in 2G spectrum scam.
