The Election Commission Tuesday announced that the bypoll to Dhuri Assembly seat in Sangrur district of Punjab will be held on April 11.

Chandigarh: The Election Commission Tuesday announced that the bypoll to Dhuri Assembly seat in Sangrur district of Punjab will be held on April 11.

"The notification for the bypoll would be issued on March 17 and the last date of filling nominations is March 24," a spokesperson of the Chief Electoral Officer, Punjab said.

He further said that scrutiny of nominations would take place on March 25, whereas last date for withdrawal of candidatures would be March 27.

"Date of poll has been fixed on April 11 between 8 AM to 5 PM and counting of votes would be held on April 15," he said.

The election process would be completed before April 18, he said.

The spokesperson further said the electoral rolls of the Assembly constituency have been revised with reference to January 1, 2015.

The Commission has decided to use EVMs in the bypoll in all the polling stations. Adequate numbers of EVMs have been made available and all steps have been taken to ensure that the polls are conducted smoothly with the help of these machines, he said.

The spokesperson further said that the model code of conduct has came into force with immediate effect in the district in which or any part of the assembly constituency going for by-election is included.

The bypoll was necessitated after Congress MLA Arvind Khanna resigned from the assembly in January this year.

His resignation was accepted by Punjab Assembly Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal on January 20.

46-year-old Khanna, a close confidante of senior Congress leader Amarinder Singh, had been MLA twice in 2002 and 2012 on a Congress ticket.
