Cong not to participate in SGPC polls

The Congress on Monday claimed that people have shown tremendous response to its ongoing membership drive.

Chandigarh: The Congress on Monday claimed that
people have shown tremendous response to its ongoing
membership drive.

Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief Mohinder Singh
Kay Pee said the party tickets in the coming Assembly
elections will be allotted on the basis of performance instead
of recommendations of various leaders.

Kay Pee in a statement here said that Congress being a
secular party will not take part in the Shiromani Gurudwara
Parbhandhak Committee (SGPC) elections.

He said the party did not mix religion with politics and
had never indulged in the politics of religion.

"We have to concentrate on non-governance and poor
performance of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)-BJP alliance
government," Kay Pee, who is also the MP from Jalandhar said.

He said that the SAD-BJP combine had utterly failed to
control the law and order situation in the state.

The Congress leader said that it was a shame that the
ruling party refused to face the Opposition even for a single
day in the four-day session of Vidhan Sabha by forcing them
out of the House using "muscle power".

The membership drive of the Congress is in full swing in
the state with applicants being asked to give a declaration
that they will not indulge in drinking and wear khadi, a party
spokesman said here.
