Chandigarh: Congress will stage mass protests across Punjab next week against what it termed as Akali-BJP government's punitive tax regime.

Pointing out that the state government had increased power tariff by 12 per cent, besides imposing VAT and surcharge on sugar and mobile phones, PCC President Amarinder Singh said this was just the beginning of a punitive tax regime for the poeple of the state.

"We will not let the government to do this and we will be holding mass protests across the state beginning July 24 from Jalandhar," he said.

The PCC chief said all party MLAs, senior leaders and functionaries will be participating in these protest dharnas.

Singh said, the Congress had continuously been cautioning the people about the deceit the government was playing with the people by way of bringing in the "tax free" budget and then imposing taxes subsequently through backdoor.

"This government has only vindicated our stand and our apprehensions have come true," he remarked.
