EC holds meeting to review poll preparedness

Chandigarh: To review the preparations for the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections, the Election Commission on Monday reviewed the position with senior state government officers.

Deputy Election Commissioner Alok Shukla, representing the Election Commission, discussed the prevailing situation with Chief Electoral Officer, Punjab, Kusumjit Sidhu, and all DCs, IGs and SSPs in the state, an official spokesman said.

A detailed review was held on topics such as electoral rolls, voter education, requirement of polling stations and EVMs. The deployment and shortage of polling personnel was also reviewed.

A special mention was made regarding expenditure monitoring of candidates. It was emphasised that all districts must have flying squads ready along with the static surveillance teams to conduct random checking of vehicles.

A proper liaison with the Director General Civil Aviation was suggested to ensure checking of all helicopters and planes chartered by the candidates before take off to ensure that they are not carrying illegal cash.

The DCs and the SSPs of the districts bordering other states were asked to keep vigil to ensure that there is no free flow of liquor and drugs into the state at the time of poll.

Shukla expressed satisfaction over the level of poll preparedness in the state, the spokesman added.
