Amritsar: A local court on Friday sentenced a former Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and four others to life imprisonment till death for killing a policeman who protested against eve-teasing of his daughter by them in a busy market place in 2012.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Harpreet Kaur Randhawa convicted and sentenced former SAD leader Ranjit Singh Rana and his four accomplices Dharamjit Singh Dharma, Gurbir Singh Bira, Vikram Ohri and Sandeep Rampal.

The court also slapped a fine of Rs 70,000 on Rana and Rs 60,000 each on rest of the accused.
Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) of police Ravinder Pal Singh was shot dead on December 5, 2012 in full public view by Rana and the four of his accomplices after he protested teasing of his daughter Robanjit Kaur by the convicts.

Expressing dissatisfaction over the court verdict Robanjit said outside the court that she would move the High Court seeking death sentence for all the accused as her father was mercilessly killed in public.

She said she was an eye witness to the crime.

Rana, the then General Secretary of district SAD unit was arrested on the same day of the crime.

At the time of the murder, the ASI was on duty. He was assaulted by the accused and then shot dead.

In January this year, Rana tried to escape from the Central jail of Amritsar but his attempt was foiled by the Jail Authorities and a fresh case was registered against him.

Kaur was appointed as Naib Tehsildar by Punjab government after her father`s death.
