Batala: The city is all geared up to celebrate the 529th marriage anniversary of Guru Nanak, popularly known as "Babe Da Viah", on Thursday.
The first Sikh Guru was married to Mata Sulakhni, daughter of Mul Chand, a Chona Khatri of Batala, in 1487.
The ceremonies were a grand affair as Sulakhni was the daughter of a revenue official. However, Guru Nanak refused to follow the marriage rituals dictated by a Brahmin of that era. He and Bibi Sulakhni took four rounds instead of the customary seven, around the sacred fire.
To ensure proper law-and-order system and to provide better facilities to the lakhs of devotees, who are going to participate in this grand ceremony, SSP, Batala, Diljinderjit Singh Dhillon held a meeting with heads of various religious bodies.
Dhillon said that police have made elaborate security arrangements to prevent any untoward incident during the marriage procession which would start from Gurudwara Dera Sahib where Guru Nanak's marriage party had stayed.
The marriage procession would terminate at Gurudwara Kand sahib where Guru Nanak's marriage was solemnised, after passing through main Bazars of the city.
Dhillon said more than 2000 police personnel from Gurdaspur, Batala and Pathankot have been deployed in various parts of the town and a total of 85 special nakas have been put up.
