Hansi-Butana canal row: Punjab govt slams Centre
The Punjab government on Wednesday said if the Centre does not pressurise Haryana to stop construction of a concrete wall along Hansi-Butana canal.
Barnala: The Punjab government
on Wednesday said if the Centre does not pressurise Haryana to stop
construction of a concrete wall along Hansi-Butana canal; it
will be responsible for any flood-related devastation caused
due to setting up of the structure.
"If the construction is not stopped, the entire onus of
any devastation caused by floods will be on the Centre," Chief
Minister Parkash Singh Badal told reporters.
"I will soon meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and urge
him to direct the Haryana government to immediately stop the
construction of the wall," he said.
He asked the Haryana government not to make Hansi-Butana
a "prestige issue" and look the issue in a wider perspective
from humanitarian angle.
On the possibility of an electoral tie-up between SAD-BJP
and BSP in the state Assembly elections, due early next year,
Badal said, "We are ready to tie-up with any like-minded party
to defeat Congress, which has always been inimical to the
interests of Punjab and Punjabis."
On problem of storage of food grains, he said despite
repeated requests, the Centre did not take any action in this
regard and the arrival of new paddy crop in the wholesale
market will worsen the situation further.
The Centre has not yet lifted the existing stocks of
paddy crop from the godowns, he said.
