Interim bail for Punjab Speaker

A special CBI court today granted interim bail till August 26 to Punjab Assembly Speaker Nirmal Singh Kahlon in a graft case.

Patiala: A special CBI court today granted
interim bail till August 26 to Punjab Assembly Speaker Nirmal
Singh Kahlon in a graft case.

Special CBI Judge Balbir Singh granted interim bail to
Kahlon who appeared before the court as per the directive of
the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Yesterday, the High Court had granted Kahlon interim
protection from arrest while directing him to appear before
the CBI court.

Kahlon, a senior leader of the ruling Shiromani Akali
Dal in Punjab, was granted bail after he furnished a bond of
Rs 50,000.

The CBI court fixed October five for further hearing in
the case involving Kahlon and 13 others.

All of them were booked in connection with alleged
irregularities during recruitment of 909 Panchayat Secretaries
from 1997-2002 when Parkash Singh Badal-led SAD-BJP government
was in power in Punjab.

Kahlon was the Rural Development and Panchayats
Minister when the recruitment took place.

After he was granted interim bail, the Speaker told
reporters the case against him was politically motivated.

Asked whether he would step down, he said the case was
part of "political vendetta against him and his party".
