Khanna: A man and a woman were set afire
today by a group of assailants at a religious place in a
village near here, triggering tension in the area.
Sohan Singh and Manjit Kaur, were offering their
services at a Darghah in Bhattian village when a group of over
20 people attacked them, sprinkled kerosene oil over them and
set them affire, Khanna DSP Raminder Singh said.
The assailants fled the scene immediately after the
incident, he said.
Singh and Kaur with 50 and 25 per cent burns
respectively have been admitted to the hospital in a critical
condition, the official said.
The incident has sparked off communal tension in the
village, prompting the police to make heavy deployments there
to keep a vigil.
Though investigations are on, dispute over the land
where the Dargah is located is suspected to be the reason
behind the incident, he said.
