A special one-day session of Punjab Assembly will be held on Monday to elect the Deputy Speaker of the House.

Chandigarh: A special one-day session of Punjab Assembly will be held on Monday to elect the Deputy Speaker of the House.

Never before in the history of the state has a session been convened for a single purpose. The only agenda of tomorrow`s sitting is to elect the Deputy Speaker, officials said here today.

The post had fallen vacant following the induction of Sat Pal Gosain as a Cabinet Minister in the SAD-BJP government recently.

BJP MLA Chunni Lal Bhagat is likely to be elected as the Deputy Speaker.

According to analysts, the one-day session will give the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) an opportunity not to face the Assembly till December this year when the next session should be called as per constitutional requirement of
holding two sessions within six months.

The Assembly elections in the state is scheduled to be held in February next year and by March new Assembly will be constituted.

The House will also pay tributes to Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal`s wife Surinder Kaur Badal, former MP Iqbal Singh Dhillon, former MLA Arjan Singh Litt and freedom fighter Satpal Kakkar.
