Amritsar: "Taken aback" by the changed looks of Jallianwalla Bagh, two MPs on Sunday briefly staged a sit-in here to protest any tampering with the historic site and said they will raise the issue in Parliament.

DMK Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi Siva and Congress` S P Singh alleged that the historic look of the Jallianwalla Bagh, where hundreds of freedom fighters were brutally killed by the Britishers, has been badly tampered with.

They said that in the next parliament session, the issue would raised with in strong words.

The MP who staged an hour-long protest said giving a new look to the entrance gate was a disrespect to the martyrs who laid down their lives for the nation.

They also lamented "poor maintenance" of this place.

"Tampering with the history would never be tolerated at any cost and the matter would also be raised with the authorities concerned at the Centre to do the needful in this regard," they said.

The Jallianwalla Bagh witnessed one of the worst massacres under the British rule when on April 13, 1919 British General Edward Dyer ordered his soldiers to fire on an unarmed and helpless crowd that had gathered to protest the arrest of two Indian freedom leaders.

The crowd included women as well as children.
