Jaipur: BJP activists and local traders staged a protest outside the world's second-largest retailer Carrefour's wholesale cash and carry store here to protest allowing FDI in retail.

The demonstration was organised after the opening of the store near Sikar road yesterday, police said today. It is the second store of the company in the country, after the one in Delhi, and the first in Rajasthan.

The protestors burnt an effigy of the Prime Minister and also set fire to a temporary welcome gate of the store and demanded that the company's representatives should clarify as to how its opening would not affect the interest of local traders, they said.

"The demonstration was part of our state-level protest against the Centre's decision to allow FDI in retail sector. It was a symbolic protest outside the Carrefour store," BJP state chief Arun Chaturvedi said.

Meanwhile, additional police personnel have been deployed outside the store to maintain law and order as BJP activists and local traders have threatened to carry out more such protests.
