Jaipur: A team of forest department
officials on Saturday destroyed the uncooked meat and remains of
three chinkaras, which were seized from an Army tank repair
unit in Rajasthan`s Barmer district.
The remains of the chinkaras (Indian gazelle), which are
included in the endangered species list, were disposed of in
the presence of district administration officials, police and
veterinary doctors, a forest department official said.
He said that investigation into the matter has begun and
all the five armymen booked under sections 9 to 51 of Wildlife
Protection Act-1972 in this connection, will be quizzed again
soon.
Punishment for offences under these sections carry a
maximum punishment of seven year jail term.
Following a tip-off, forest department officials had
yesterday seized the remains from the camp of 88 Armoured
Workshop, which is there to take part in Operation Sudershan
Shakti being conducted by the Bhopal-based 21 Strike Corps.
The accused army personnel purportedly told forest
officials last evening that they had bought the meat from some
villagers and this is being verified, said the official.
