Social activists appealed to
the Rajasthan governor to release Khalil Chisty, a Pakistani
national serving life sentence in Ajmer Jail, on humanitarian
ground on the occasion of human rights day on Saturday.
"It is the time that the Governor responds to this
humanitarian call and signs the mercy petition as Chisty
deserves a pardon on human rights day," social activist Aruna
Roy told a press conference here.
The virologist was convicted in a murder case by a court
after an 18-year-long trial in January this year.
His family members had forwarded a mercy petition to the
Governor few months back.
Prem Kishan Sharma, another human rights activist, said
one prisoner died of cancer in Jaipur Central jail some time
back waiting for the Governor to grant him mercy and now
Chisty waits in Ajmer jail, while his mercy petition is
pending with the Governor.
