Jaipur: Four test-tube babies were on Saturday successfully delivered to two women here through an In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) programme, undertaken for the first time by Rajasthan government.

Dr. Rakesh Pratap Khutenta, Professor of Obstetrics and Gyneocology at the SMS medical college and Mahila Chikitsalaya here performed sigerian following which two babies were born to Mamta and as many born to Neelam this morning in Mahila government hospital.

"All the newborns are female and babies and mothers are in normal and healthy conditions," Dr. Khutenta said. "The facility of IVF was already available in private hospitals but not with government sector so we launched it in government hospital of the state last year and have conducted IVF on several infertile couples," he said, adding, that the four babies were the result of first batch of IVR his team conducted.

"Each IVF has cost Rs 35,000 barring medicines, and we are now proposing the state government to bring the cost down. It is already free for BPL patients. We are also requesting the government to make advance machines like ICSI available for improvement of results," he said.

"We set up 'Raj Care IVF center' at Charak Bhawan in SMS hospital for infertile couples in September last year. Since January 13, 2010, we have conducted IVF of about 40 such couples," he added.
