IIT-Jodhpur: Students' protest continue for sixth day

Jodhpur: The agitating students of the IIT Jodhpur, who have been demanding removal of its director for his "dictatorial attitude" since last week, organised a mock funeral of "peace and mind" at the campus on Sunday.

The students have been agitating against a recently-passed Code of Conduct, which prevents them from speaking to media about the institute and "on controversial topics".

After taking out a candle march yesterday, they assembled at the campus' academic block today in large number bearing text "Peace-Minds of students and faculties of IIT Jodhpur 2008-2013".

They all offered flowers on a stone and sat around in mourning.

"It is the peace of our mind, which has been snatched away from us and to mark this, we have organised a mock funeral of peace and mind," said a student.

He said that they had been agitating for the past six days and are very disappointed to note that despite reaching our voices and woes to all the higher doorsteps, we have not been heard.

"It is quite disheartening that the mass agitation at a premier technology institute has failed to faze the government corridors," said a faculty member.

The director, CRR Murti, however, tried to meet the students to resolve the stand off yesterday but the students refused to meet them.

"We have already met him a number of times bringing the issues of contention to his notice but he never cared but now we are not contented with anything less than the director's removal," said the students.

On the other hand, the chairman of the board of Governor Goverdhan Mehta has also appealed both to the director and the students to strike a solution to this impasse with immediate effect in order to save the reputation of the institute.

"This is very unfortunate and I am trying to resolve the matter soon," he said.
