Jodhpur fit place for IIT, says govt panel

A high-level committee is understood to have favoured Jodhpur as the site for IIT, Rajasthan.

New Delhi: A high-level committee is
understood to have favoured Jodhpur as the site for IIT,
Rajasthan.

The HRD Ministry`s site selection committee, headed by
Additional Secretary Ashok Thakur, visited different places in
Rajashtan last month and has submitted its report to HRD
Minister Kapil Sibal.

The committee is understood to have said that Jodhpur is a
fit location for the IIT. It has also favoured Udaipur for
setting up of a proposed IIM.

The government started IIT Rajasthan last year, but this
institute is running in IIT Kanpur as it is yet to have its
own campus.

The site selection for the institute was delayed after the
HRD Ministry rejected an earlier proposal to set up the
institute at Kota. The ministry rejected Kota on the ground
that it did not have a good connectivity.

Then the state government set up a separate committee for
selection of the site. That committee had suggested Jodhpur.

Jodhpur had an edge over Kota in view of good roads and
rail links apart from the air connectivity. Udaipur too has
good roads, rail and air connectivity. As per the requirement,
there should be 500 acres of land at the site for setting up
of an IIT. Meanwhile, the HRD Ministry will send another committee to
the state for site selection for Rajasthan Central University.

It will visit Ajmer and Bikaner which have been suggested
by the state government as location for the university.

While Ajmer is near to the state capital Jaipur and has
better connectivity, Bikaner does not have similar facilities,
ministry sources said.

The Central University of Rajasthan has started
functioning from a temporary campus in Japipur since this
year.
