New-born girl dumped near sewer in Udaipur

A new-born girl was found dumped on the edge of a sewer line in a deserted area in Rajasthan`s Udaipur city.

Udaipur: A new-born girl was found dumped on the edge of a sewer line in a deserted area in Rajasthan`s Udaipur city early Saturday morning, police said. The infant girl, who appears to have been disowned by her parents, has been adopted by an NGO.

"Some morning joggers heard the cries of a baby. They spotted her lying on the brink of the sewer line in Udaipur Road area of the city," a police officer told IANS. Udaipur is 300 km from state capital Jaipur.

The joggers immediately informed the police. "The girl was rushed to a hospital where she is undergoing treatment," the officer said.

"The girl had been dumped in the wee hours Saturday. It seems that the child was dumped because it was a girl. People here prefer boys over girls. It is cruel to dump the baby in a sewer line," the officer said.

"We have registered a first information report and are trying to trace the girl`s parents. An NGO has come forward to take care of the child," said the officer.

According to Census 2011, Rajasthan has 883 girls between the ages of 0-6 for every 1,000 boys in the same age group. The child sex ratio in 2001 was 909 girls per 1,000 boys.
