India’s eradication of poverty ground sweeps the day at Rio

Zeenews Bureau

New Delhi: India had more than one reason to be happy, when its main concern of eradication of poverty be given the highest priority was agreed by the 192 countries that gathered at Rio de Janeiro.

World leaders gathered in Rio on Wednesday weighed steps to root out poverty and protect the environment as UN chief Ban Ki-moon warned that “time is not on our side” for fixing a mounting list of problems.

After a lot of hustle and tussle, the developed countries agreed to India’s goal of removing poverty above all other objectives in the final Rio+20 document named “The Future We Want”. The document says, “Eradicating poverty is the greatest global challenge facing the world today and an indispensible requirement for sustainable development.”

The two-day Earth summit, officially called the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, comes 20 years after the first Earth Summit was held in this Brazilian city.
