1,411 tigers across India: Jairam Ramesh New Delhi: There are an estimated 1,411 tigers across the country with Madhya Pradesh accounting for a highest of 300 big cats, Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh told the Lok Sabha today.

"As per the findings of the recent All India tiger estimation in 2008 using refined methodology, the total country-level population of tigers is 1,411 (mid-value); the lower and upper limits being 1,165 and 1,657 respectively," he said in a written reply.

According to state-wise details of the tiger population, Madhya Pradesh has the highest number of tigers at 300 followed by Karnataka (290), Uttarakhand (178), Uttar Pradesh (109) and Maharashtra (103).

Jharkhand and Sunderbans region in West Bengal were not assessed for tiger population.

The findings are based on spatial occupancy of tigers and sampling such forests using camera traps in a statistical framework, which are not comparable to the earlier total count using pugmarks, Ramesh said.

The findings indicate a poor status of tiger population in places outside tiger reserves and protected areas.

As many as 15 tigers were killed by poachers till November 11 this year, Ramesh said.

tiger, apart from our national animal is just like any other living being that has a life of its own. we humans are hunting them and killing them only to make money. man the most powerful being on this earth has the responsibility to look after all other living creatures. if humans will destroy their own planet then nobody can save it. tigers, may be ferocious but it is a part of the balanced ecosystem. people need to change their selfish mind, and pay attention to the tiger population which is dwindling day by day due to some of the inhuman poachers. the recent ad to save tigers has opened my eyes and i felt myself in the position of the cub who was waiting for its mother to come. the mother would have the same affection which a human mother has towards her children. while dying she must have thought about her cub who would have no body in this world of humans. if at this stage if the humans would not take of this cub, then like its mother it will also die. i request everybody with folded hands ``please don`t harm the wild animals and destroy their habitat``. i am thankful to some people who are spreading this awareness to save tigers. this is very much needed at this moment.
