New Delhi: Brazil police on Friday arrested a gang who have carried out the worst environmental crimes of performing deforestation in the Amazon region.

The gang consists of 8 members who would invade public land and then sell it to farmers illegaly amassing huge amounts of money. Two members of the group have been arrested while six are still at large.

According to the Brazilian Environmental Institute, “The group has carried out environmental crimes valued at $230 million, making them “the greatest destroyers of the Brazilian Amazon currently active,” as quoted in a statement to AFP.

Last year, the Brazilian government said that deforestation of its Amazon rainforest rose by 28% over the period of August 2012 to July 2013.

Brazil is considered as one of the biggest areas of the Amazon rainforest, which absorbs huge amounts of carbon-di-oxide, saving us from global warming.
