‘Ensure Copenhagen meet doesn’t settle for ineffective deal’ New Delhi: India today said global warming threat should be seen through the prism of security and collaborative approach to ensure that the Copenhagen meet on climate change in December does not settle for a deal that is ineffective.

"There is no doubt that if we say that we are facing an element of threat to calamity, if we say that we are facing an extraordinary challenge that requires extraordinary response, then the least common denominator is not the response that is required," Shyam Saran, country's chief climate change negotiator said here.

Saran who was speaking at a discussion on "Environment and Conflict Resolution" said, "These negotiations are being carried out in what I would call the advisory reports... we are expected to safeguard our interest, try to extract as much from the other side (developed nations) and give as little to other side (developing nations) and the inevitable result of this kind of negotiations is nothing but a common denominator."

He was apparently referring to the failure of the developed countries to meet the emissions cuts and financial commitments made in Kyoto Protocol which is expected to be replaced at Copenhagen through a new treaty on climate change.

Saran said there was a need to see the climate change issue from the prism of security and hold negotiations accordingly.
