Govt to conduct study on communities dependant on Ganga for livelihood

As part of the Ganga rejuvenation project, the government is planning to conduct a study on the communities which are traditionally dependent on the river for their livelihood.



New Delhi: As part of the Ganga rejuvenation project, the government is planning to conduct a study on the communities which are traditionally dependent on the river for their livelihood.

The ministry will attempt to involve the communities traditionally dependant on Ganga for their livelihood in the rejuvenation project and will conduct a study on them, an official of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Ministry told PTI.

The ministry has also decided to initiate plans to conserve the aquatic life of the river, including the gangetic dolphins, tortoise and crocodiles.

It will also prepare guidelines for sand mining to avoid any obstructions in the course of Ganga. An evaluation of the properties along the banks will also be carried out.

For the safety, beautification and development of civic amenities along the banks of the river the ministry has initiated the process of preparing a detailed project report (DPR). The process for formation of Ganga Task Force has also been initiated.

The officials of Ganga Rejuvenation Ministry have carried out a study with the convenors of IIT consortium to decide the quantity of water, depending on the place and weather, for the continuous flow of the river.

To ensure that the irrigation capacity of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh remains not only unaffected but is improved, the ministry has started preparing a plan under Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Program (AIBP) with modern techniques to improve irrigation capacity and has initiated a pilot project in Ganga Basin.

The process for a DPR by various agencies of the ministry for the river front development has been initiated.

A detailed project report for two ghats along the river in Delhi and Haridwar is being prepared and in Mathura and Vrindavan construction of river ghats is being carried out under the PPP model.

Afforestation along Ganga, Yamuna and other linking rivers is also underway.

The ministry in association with Aayush ministry is also planning to develop a PPP model for planting medicinal plants and the distribution of its products.

Consultations have been held with industrial units in five states to ensure the cleanliness of Ganga. Central Pollution Control Board have given all polluting units quality monitoring devices to implement by March 31, 2015.
