Kolkata: Targeting a zero-carbon footprint, as many as 50 battery-less, carbon-neutral solar street lights have been set up in a south Kolkata neighbourhood by the the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.

Being carbon neutral - removing as much carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as individuals or organisations put in to it, these lights driven by solar energy will help achieve a zero carbon footprint.

Each of these lights, dotting Deshapriya Park, have a 180-watt LED based panel that is equivalent of 400 watts of traditional sodium vapour electricity street lights).

Electricity will be generated throughout the day by the solar panels and it will be put into the grid. At night the LEDs will be fired up with this electricity.

"Proud to gift our beloved city the country's first Battery-less, Carbon-neutral, Solar Street Lights," tweeted Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee recently announcing the new initiative.

According to sources, an automatic control system will enable the lights to be switched on automatically after evening.

Estimated at Rs.40 lakh, the project is expected to bring down electricity bills for the Corporation.
