It was created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, who launched the application in October 2010. The app however, gained popularity only in April 2012, with over 100 million active users.

Here are some facts about the photo-sharing app:

Instagram is an online photo-sharing and video-sharing app that enables the users to click pictures, record videos and share it on the site. The users can also upload the photos and videos via Facebook, Twitter. The app, as of 2014 data has over 200 millions active user.

Instagram was first launched as an iPhone app on October 6, 2010. It made one million users by December 2010, which doubled in two years time. There are around 60 million photos uploaded everyday on the site, which means almost 700 photos every second.

By June 2013, Instagram launched a video-sharing function and then around 5 million videos were uploaded within the first 24 hours.

The Android version of the app was released on April 3, 2013. Over one million times in less than 12 hours the app was downloaded since its release. Around 4,30,000 pre-registrations were received for the Android version even before the release of the app.

Instagrammers (as its users are fondly called) check their phone at least once a day but some of them check updates frequently. The addiction is such that often users get hooked to check or upload regular updates. The exclusive function of making any picture a 'favourite' makes one come back to the photo-sharing app.
