Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia has drawn up a roadmap
to increase to 1,000 the country's tiger population, which has
plummeted from 3000 some 50 years ago to just 500 now.
The National Biodiversity-Biotechnology Council (NBBC)
has adopted the National Tiger Action Plan as a roadmap to
manage and conserve the Malayan tiger population, Deputy
Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said.
It would enhance the management of the dwindling species
by improving its corridor network and sanctuaries, he noted.
"The action plan has targeted to increase Malayan
tigers' population to 1,000 by 2020 in their natural habitat,"
Muhyiddin told reporters.
The population of Malayan tigers had dropped to 500 from
3,000 in 1950, national news agency 'Bernama' said.
