London: Sony Pictures Entertainment, the motion pictures giant, has been struck by a large scale cyber attack.

The computer systems of the company were shut down in New York City, Culver City, CA and overseas offices by a cyber intrusion on Monday, as reported by a major news website.

"Sony Pictures Entertainment experienced a system disruption, which we are working diligently to resolve," a spokesperson for the corporation said of the incident.

How the security breach occurred or if significant internal data has been compromised has not yet been clarified by any official, neither is anything known about the motivation and perpetrators of the attack.

Sony Pictures Entertainment is one of the largest film production and distribution companies in the world, with high-profile upcoming film projects including 'Bond 24', 'Sausage Party' and 'Angry Birds'.
