Beijing, June 20: Tibet is facing the worst
drought in 30 years which has affected 15.3 per cent of remote
Plateau, damaging thousands of hectares and killing 13,601
head of cattle, authorities said on Saturday.
Nine meteorological centers in Tibet have not seen
substantial rain for 226 consecutive days, Xinhua news agency
quoted Zhao Yiping, head of the Tibet Regional Meteorological
Bureau, as saying.
Higher than normal temperature has worsen the
situation. This year Tibet has experienced 0.4 to 2.3 Celsius
degrees higher temperature than normal, Zhao said.
Prolonged drought has hit 33 counties, 15.3 per cent
of Tibet's total, in five of the six prefectures in Tibet, the
regional drought relief and flood control headquarters said.
"26,500 hectares were damaged and 793 hectares were
destroyed. The drought has also killed 13,601 head of cattle,"
it said.
Tibet Regional Meteorological Bureau, which has
forecast a rain in Lhasa and Xigaze from June 22 to 25, is
considering to have artificial rain for drought relief.
Last month, Zhao Yiping, head of the Tibet Regional
Meteorological Bureau, has warned that china will face floods
and drought due to global warming.
