Peshawar: Twenty-six militants and a
soldier were killed in fierce fighting on Tuesday in Orakzai tribal
region of northwest Pakistan, where troops are conducting a
campaign to flush out Taliban fighters.
A group of armed militants attacked a security check
post at Kharsha in Orakzai Agency, killing a soldier.
Security forces shot dead 20 militants and injured
seven more in retaliatory firing, a security official said.
Security forces killed six more militants during a
clash in Daray Soty area of Orakzai Agency.
Ten militants and five security personnel were
injured in the gun battle.
Troops launched an offensive in Orakzai Agency in
mid-March to flush out militants who fled an army offensive in
nearby South Waziristan last year.
The military claims artillery barrages and air strikes
have killed hundreds of militants over the past two months.
