5,000 acres of land along B’desh in adverse possession

More than 5,000 acres are in "adverse possession" of both India and Bangladesh, which has prompted the government to try to sort out cultivation issues on this land with the neighbouring country.

New Delhi: More than 5,000 acres are in
"adverse possession" of both India and Bangladesh, which has
prompted the government to try to sort out cultivation issues
on this land with the neighbouring country.

While about 2771.86 acres of Indian land is in adverse
possession of Bangladesh, around 2922.25 acres of Bangladesh
land is under adverse possession of India, government sources
said.

Adverse possession is a term used to identify the
geographical land mass surrounded by the other country.

Officials from different government agencies and security
forces are trying to find out a solution to the issue by the
way of discussions, as cultivation and border fencing issues
are involved, the sources said.

Sources said currently, Standard Operating Procedures
(SOP) have been put in place to facilitate cultivation of
these lands by farmers ahead of border fencing.

India shares a 4,095-km border with Bangladesh.

This includes a 2,979-km land border and 1,116 km of
riverine border. Among the states, Tripura shares 856 km,
Meghalaya 443 km, Mizoram 318 km and Assam 263 km of border
with Bangladesh.

Fencing work has so far been completed along a 2,800-km
stretch and construction on the remaining portion is on.
