59 Indians in Bangla jail after completing terms

Indian nationals, three of them women, are languishing in prisons in Bangladesh`s Satkhira district, despite having completed their sentences.

Dhaka: At least 59 Indian nationals,
three of them women, are languishing in prisons in
Bangladesh`s Satkhira district, despite having completed their
sentences, a media report said Monday.

The Indians were arrested over the last few years from
border areas for their alleged involvement in smuggling and
arms peddling, and were tried and sentenced by courts.
However, despite having completed their prison terms
they are yet to be sent back to their homes due to the
"indifferent attitude" of the BSF, the Daily Star said in a
report.

Some of the Indians completed their terms way back in
2002.

The report said that the jail authorities tried to
send them back to India several times but the Border Security
Force declined to accept them saying they did not have `order
from the government.`

"We could not send them back as the Indian authorities
are not showing interest," a jail official was quoted as
saying.
