Dozens of Hindus have been kidnapped for ransom in Balochistan over the past two years.

Islamabad: Pakistani police on Thursday rescued a Hindu trader who was kidnapped by unidentified armed men in the restive Balochistan province of southwest Pakistan, officials said.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team conducted a raid in Azizabad area of Mastung district and rescued Vijay Kumar, who was kidnapped from a market on Wednesday evening.

However, the abductors managed to escape, officials said. The Hindu Panchayat and Mastung Traders Association appreciated the action taken by the police to trace Kumar.

Members of the minority Hindu community had organised a demonstration outside the Balochistan Assembly last month to protest the abduction and killing of a Hindu trader.
