Kandahar: A bomb mounted on a bicycle
exploded in the southern Afghan province of Helmand on Tuesday,
killing seven people, a provincial official said.
The attack struck in Lashkar Gah, the provincial capital
of Helmand, where US, NATO and Afghan soldiers are waging a
major offensive against Taliban militants.
"Explosives fixed on a bicycle exploded in Lashkar Gah
today," the spokesman for the governor of Helmand province,
Daud Ahmadi, said to a news agency.
"The blast killed seven civilians and injured another
14," said Ahmadi.
Helmand and neighbouring Kandahar province have been
hotspots for Taliban-led militants since their 1996-2001
regime was overthrown.
Helmand's provincial police chief, Assadullah Shairzad,
said the bike rigged with explosives was placed near a crowded
bus terminal, which connects the town to Kandahar, and a
government traffic department.
"We don't know what the target was," he said.
