Kabul: A family of five were killed by a
roadside bomb that struck their vehicle in eastern Afghanistan on Sunday, a government official said.

Rohullah Samon, spokesman for Paktia province`s
governor, said the family was driving from Kabul when the
explosion destroyed their car. All the occupants were killed.

The national capital is about 100 Km north of the
location.

The nine-year war has inflicted a mounting toll on
Afghan civilians. The United Nations says insurgents are
responsible for most civilian deaths and injuries. However,
noncombatants are also killed in NATO military operations.

A UN report said more than 1,200 Afghans died and
nearly 2,000 were wounded between January and June this year.
