Kabul: An insurgent rocket attack on a
NATO base in Afghanistan on Saturday killed three children and
wounded their mother, the alliance said.

Two of the children were killed at the base in Khost
province, in the east of the country, while the third died of
her wounds later, NATO`s International Security Assistance
Force (ISAF) said in a statement.

"It`s hard to imagine what this family is faced
with at the loss of three children and a wounded mother. Our
thoughts are with the family during this extremely tough
time," US Army Colonel Rafael Torres, ISAF Joint Command
Combined Joint Operations Center director, said.

The issue of civilian casualties is sensitive in
Afghanistan, where nearly 150,000 foreign troops are waging a
campaign to beat a nearly-nine year Taliban insurgency.

The United Nations said this week that the number
of civilian casualties was up a third in the first half of
this year, with insurgents killing seven times more civilians
than NATO-led troops.
