Afghanistan: Taliban `did not orchestrate UN attack’
Taliban deny that the insurgency was responsible for killing seven UN staff.
Kabul: The Taliban say they did not orchestrate Friday`s attack on an UN compound in northern Afghanistan that left seven foreigners dead.
Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid sent a text message to a news agency on Saturday denying that the insurgency was responsible for killing four UN guards and three other foreigners working at the UN complex in Mazar-i-Sharif.
They were killed when hundreds of Afghans angry about the recent burning of the Muslim holy book at a small Florida church stormed the UN compound.
Authorities say at least 100 demonstrators protested the Quran burning on Saturday in Kandahar in the south. A report estimated the crowd at a few thousand and said the demonstrators turned violent.
