Aizaz Chaudhry to be new Pak foreign secretary: Report
Foreign Office spokesman Aizaz Chaudhry is likely to be appointed as Pakistan`s Foreign Secretary, according to a media report.
Islamabad: Foreign Office spokesman Aizaz Chaudhry is likely to be appointed as Pakistan`s Foreign Secretary, according to a media report.
Chaudhry, ambassador-designate to Belgium and the European Union,?is expected to get the post instead of the government`s original choice, Abdul Basit, who is currently Pakistan`s envoy to Germany.
Though a final notification has not been issued, Chaudhry is tipped to replace Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani, who has already been appointed the Ambassador to the US, Dawn newspaper reported.
Chaudhry is currently the spokesman and Additional Foreign Secretary. While earlier the government had decided on Basit, sources said last minute changes had been made.
The report said Basit was readying to return to Pakistan to take up the new assignment and had even paid his farewell calls to the German leadership.
Jilani`s departure to the US has also been delayed due to the new development. "Chaudhry was anyway senior to Basit," an official source said.
Another officer, who had served as the spokesperson of the Ministry, is likely to replace Chaudhry, sources said. Everything will depend on the official results of the promotion boards, they said.
The government has also changed its plan to send noted columnist Kamran Shafi as High Commissioner to London. Reports said Basit could be posted to Britain now.
