Amnesty India hails UN`s naming of Lanka rights probe panel

Chennai: Amnesty International India today welcomed UN`s naming of three experts to conduct a comprehensive probe into alleged human rights violations in Sri Lanka during the armed conflict in 2009. "Their appointment is a welcome sign of progress in the effort to establish once and for all what happened in the final phase of Sri Lanka`s long armed conflict and to ensure justice, truth and reparation for victims," the human rights body said in a release. UN had named Pakistani Human Rights activist Asma Jahangir, Martti Ahtisaari, former President of Finland and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and Silvia Cartwright, a former Governor-General and High Court judge of New Zealand to probe allegations of abuse of human rights and related crimes during the armed conflict involving Sri Lankan army and the LTTE.
