Lahore: The police force in Pakistan's Punjab province has been embroiled in yet another controversy after its official website posted a statement by Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif purportedly backing the actions of former military ruler Pervez Musharraf.

"The government has wholeheartedly embraced president Musharraf's vision to revamp the police and make it responsive to the needs of the people of Pakistan," Sharif was quoted as saying on the website.

The controversy comes close on the heels of a public outcry over an advertisement issued to leading newspapers by Punjab Police that featured the logo of the police force in India's Punjab state.

The provincial police chief has ordered an inquiry into the lapse and authorities have blamed a government department that sent the advertisement to newspapers.

Chief Minister Sharif too has been at the centre of a storm following his remarks that the Taliban should spare Punjab as the militants and his PML-N party had both opposed Musharraf and the dictation of Pakistan's policies from abroad.
