B'deshi court orders arrest of top Islamist leader

Dhaka: A Bangladeshi court on Monday issued an arrest warrant against a top leader of a key Islamist party which is a crucial ally of the main opposition BNP.

The Second Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate issued arrest warrant against Fazlul Haque Amini, the controversial chairman of a faction of Islami Oikya Jote (IOJ), and four others for assaulting a student.

"The Second Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (Abu Zafar Mohammad Kamruzzaman) asked police to arrest them," in accordance with a plea of the victim Sharif Hossain, a court official said.

Hossain alleged that Amini and the four others assaulted him for refusing to join a rally by IOJ.

The Amini-led IOJ faction is an ally of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
