Dhaka: Bangladesh's elite Rapid Action Battalion has arrested an alleged operative of banned HuJI, who is one of the accused in the assassination of the country's former finance minister Shah AMS Kibria in 2005.
Officials said the elite anti-crime troops detained
Shah Mizanur Rahman Mithu (23) from a village in Habiganj
district last night.
"The Huji operative admitted his involvement with
the grenade attack on Kibria," a RAB spokesman said.
Kibria, an high-profile leader of the now ruling Awami
League, was killed in a grenade attack on January 27, 2005
while he was addressing a public rally at his constituency in
Habiganj.
HuJI was suspected to have carried out the attack at
the behest of Opposition BNP leader Lutfuzzaman Babar.
The HuJI operative also admitted to the elite force
that he himself had thrown the grenade, RAB officials said.
He was a student of a local madrasa when he came in
touch with the Huji men in 2005.
The arrest came weeks after Babar was remanded in
custody for his alleged role in the assassination.
A court had last week asked the Criminal Investigation
Department (CID) to file a supplementary investigation report
of the case on March 20.
Babar is suspected to have masterminded several
other attacks, including the August 21, 2004 grenade attack on
Hasina when she was the opposition leader.
