Delwar Hossain Sayedee is accused of aiding Pakistan and leading groups that committed serious crimes.
Dhaka: A senior leader from the Bangladesh`s largest Islamic party has been charged with war crimes for his alleged involvement in the country`s 1971 independence war against Pakistan.
A special tribunal dealing with charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity involving the war on Monday accepted prosecution charges against Delwar Hossain Sayedee from the Jamaat-e-Islami party. He is accused of aiding Pakistan and leading groups that committed serious crimes such as killing, looting, arson and rape.
Sayedee has denied the allegations. His trial is scheduled to begin on October 30.
Aided by India, Bangladesh won independence in 1971 from Pakistan through a nine-month war.
