Bangladesh opposition calls new general strike

Bangladesh`s main opposition parties seek to protest government moves to amend the Constitution.

Dhaka: Bangladesh`s main opposition parties have called a second general strike this month to protest government moves to amend the Constitution.

Main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its ally Islamic fundamentalist Jamaat-e-Islami say they will enforce the 36-hour nationwide shutdown beginning at dawn on Sunday.

The opposition says the government wants to repeal a provision that requires it to hand over power at the end of its term to a nonpartisan caretaker administration to oversee elections.

The change would mean the next general election due in 2014 will be overseen by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Opposition spokesman Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir says that could lead to vote-rigging to favour Hasina`s party.
