Mumbai: A Bangladeshi TV channel`s chief
has been arrested for allegedly possessing a pistol and seven
live cartridges at the Mumbai International Airport here,
police said on Friday.
Abdus Salam Mohammed Kareem (50), Chairman of Ekushey
Television and resident of Dhaka, was apprehended at the
airport when securitymen conducted a routine check and found
one `.22 pistol` and seven live cartridges in his possession
last evening, they said.
"Abdus had a flight early in the morning to
Bangladesh. While security check was on, he was frisked by
CISF men when the pistol and bullets were found in his bag.
Subsequently he was handed over to us. He works for Ekushey
channel in Bangladesh," Inspector B N Tambe at Sahar Airport
Police Station said.
The Bangladeshi national was booked under relevant
sections of the Indian Arms Act and his luggage was seized,
Tambe said, adding that he was produced before a local court
which remanded him in police custody for two days.
"Abdus claimed that he had come to Mumbai for some
work and had his flight to Bangladesh in the morning today,"
the officer said.
He was carrying a valid passport and arms licence of
Bangladesh, police said adding that further probe was on.
